PRETOMA
Good NGO but a bit expensive on the donation side. People who run it seem very dedicated and do want people who will work not just people who want a vacation. Speaking spanish is a plus and the living spaces are wooden and old, and be sure to bring bug spray because sandflies can be a bitch. (must be at least semi low maintainence). The beaches are beautiful and the people are chill.
San Miguel
Small village of only a few people. Pretty and out of the way. Internet and ATM is an hour walk or hitchhiking is safe during the day. Small plus for guy volunteers, most of the people who volunteer for sea turtle conservation are young females. The surfing is good from what I hear. A few america ex-pats move there and work in bars for the surfing.
